Michael Campbell will be looking for a similar first day start when he tees up in the second round of the JB Were Australian Masters in Melbourne.
Campbell birdied three of his opening eight holes in an eventual two over par 74 that left him trailing eight strokes behind the leading trio of World No. 1 Tiger Woods, Australia’s James Nitties and South African Branden Grace.
Woods sounded his intentions right from the outset with seven birdies and just one bogey in front on record crowds that flocked to the Kingston Heath course.
"I felt good today, I hit the ball pretty decent," said Woods.
"I didn't make a lot of putts but I had great speed and a couple of iron shots which were 30 to 40 feet away.
"The crowd was great today.
"People were obviously excited about our pairing (with Craig Parry and Rod Pampling) and the people were extremely respectful. They were actually policing themselves, which was great."
Campbell’s opening nine holes was a mix of birdies at his first, sixth and eight holes but also bogeys at the fourth and ninth holes.
The former U.S. Open and past Australian Masters champion then had five straight pars ahead of dropping three shots over his next three holes and ending with a par for his 74.
“It was a pretty decent start but it just got away from me there at the end of my round,” he said.
“I am out early on day two when the course should be at its best so hopefully I can get a few early birdies and pick a few more coming in that should push me a lot higher up the board ahead of the weekend.”
Campbell will commence his second round from the 10th tee at 7.20am local time.
