Michael Campbell is hoping history will be kind to him when he tees up in this week’s Omega Dubai Desert Classic.
Of course, Campbell hasn’t enjoyed the best of form of late but he still recalls his first-ever visit to the oil-rich UAE state.
That was in 1995 and Campbell finished to visiting American Fred Couples courtesy of weekend rounds of 65 and 67.
“Fifteen years is a long time but I had a great result that first year shooting two good weekend rounds that got me right up there into third place,” he said.
“But while the golf course hasn’t changed the Dubai skyline has and it’s credible when you look at the backdrop to the course now.
“It seems there’s a new high-rise going up every day while there’s a new building that’s gone up to the left side of the range that I’m sure wasn’t there last year.”
Campbell has been obseved working very hard on his game ahead of this week’s $US 2.5m event.
Sue Page, who is PR chief in Europe for Callaway, has also kept Campbell in frame for a series of publicity pictures.
“We’ve got some 16 Callaway Staff players here this week so we need swing sequence shots and also photos of the players alongside their Callaway golf bags,” said Sue.
“Cambo’s always very obliging and everyone at Callaway is wishing him well this week.”
Campbell will play the opening two rounds in the company of Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie and in-form South African Louis Oosthuizen.
The trio will commence their rounds at 11.55am local Dubai time.
