Michael Campbell fans will be anxiously glued to TV coverage from this week’s Madrid Masters.
The former U.S. Open champion is returning to competition after a two-month lay-off following the disappointment of missing the halfway cut in the U.S. Masters.
Campbell has chosen this week’s Madrid Masters in the Spain to make his return and his entry in the European Tour event has guaranteed added interest in the tournament being defended by England’s affable Ross McGowan.
European Tour officials have drawn Campbell to tee up in the second group on day one at 8.10am local Spanish time.
Campbell will be competing alongside Australia’s Scott Hend and Argentina’s in-form Rafa Echenique.
On Monday Echenique finished the second leading player in a 36-hole U.S. Open qualifier at the Walton Heath golf club in Surrey.
It will ensure Campbell and Echenique will have much to talk about as five years ago Campbell also qualified for the U.S. Open and then proceeded to become on the second New Zealander to win a Major with his 2005 victory at Pinehurst.
Campbell and Scotland’s Paul Lawrie will be the only Major Champions competing in Madrid, and it's also the first occasion Campbell has contested the event.
And joining Campbell will be fellow New Zealanders Mark Brown and Danny Lee.
