Bernie McGuire

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Michael Campbell has praised fellow New Zealander Sir Bob Charles for his contribution to New Zealand golf.

Charles, 74 ended his international playing career on Friday after two rounds of the British Senior Open at Carnoustie.

It was Charles' final event on the international stage in a superb career than began in 1958 when the then 18-year old left-hander captured the New Zealand Open.

Charles capped his 65-tournament winning career in winning the 1963 British Open at Royal Lytam and St. Annes.

"It's a sad time for New Zealand golf with Bob stepping off the international stage as he did on Friday at Carnoustie," said Campbell from Sweden where he is contesting the European Tour's Scandinavian Masters.

"Sir Bob was one of the reasons why I took up golf and I'm sure it is the same for many New Zealanders.

"He was the first New Zealander to win a Major, and he was also the first lefty to do so but more than that  I will always remember how wonderful he has been to me over the years.

"He's always been there if I needed him offering advice and guidance.

"Sir Bob has been an inspiration not only to me but to young golfers across New Zealand, and knowing that if you worked hard enough you could attain your ambitions.

"He was fabulous when I won the U.S. Open and I will never forget the words he said to me.

"Sir Bob is one of this country's greatest ever sports persons and New Zealand can be proud of how he's played the game of golf and how he's conducted himself over 50 years.

"As the only other New Zealander to win a golf Major I'd like to congratulate Sir Bob on his enormous contribution to golf in New Zealand, and to wish him every good fortune and health in the years to come."
