It is a welcome return to Ireland for Michael Campbell.
Campbell tees up in today’s starting ‘3’ Irish Open as a former winner of the event.
With his parents proudly watching on, Campbell won a play-off to capture the 2003 Irish Open at Portmarnock a week after the New Zealander had competed in the British Open.
Campbell’s victory on the famed links course near Dublin came a year after the Callaway player had captured the European Open at the K. Club in County Kildare.
“I always enjoy returning to Ireland as it’s one of the highlights of the year,” he said.
“The Irish people are always so welcoming and they just love their golf so much.
“Organsiers have assembled a great field this year and it’s hard to see past the likes of Rory (McIlroy) and Graeme McDowell while Padraig (Harrington) must be due again.
“But I’m looking forward to the week and hopefully I can play well.”
Campbell will tee-up at 2.20pm in the company of Scotland’s Alastair Forsyth and Spaniard Pablo Martin.
